A house with a story dating back to the 16th century

The building at the current address Andreja Sládkoviča 16 is one of the historic buildings in the Banská Štiavnica Town Monument Reserve. Its oldest parts date back to the 16th century according to architectural elements, with the first written records of the house coming from 1712.

The house was part of the town's life during the period when Štiavnica was developing as an important mining centre. Over the centuries, it changed owners, underwent several reconstructions, and gradually expanded. The originally single-storey building was raised in the 18th century and acquired its current characteristic footprint.

An interesting feature is its location – it is situated directly below the New Castle and in close proximity to the historic road leading to the former slaughterhouses and commercial parts of the town. This location was part of the town's defence system, which protected Štiavnica from raids.

In the 19th century, the house became part of the town hospital and later served various purposes, from healthcare to housing. Thanks to this, it has retained its authentic character and natural connection to the town's history.

Today, Frauenberg is a place where historical value meets comfortable accommodation.

According to its architectural elements, the oldest parts of the house date back to the 16th century. The neighbouring building – today's Frauenberg (originally a chapel) – was also built during this period, significantly influencing the character of the entire area.

The house was built on an important city thoroughfare at a time when the defence system of Banská Štiavnica was being constructed.

The house is historically documented for the first time. Its owner is Ján Krištof Geyert, a butcher and horse trader.

Even at this time, it was a functional townhouse with an economic background.

Artisan history

Change of ownership and craft history

The house, along with the butcher's shop (slaughterhouse), passes into the ownership of the Škultéty family. The craft character of the locality is further strengthened.

First exact house registration

The house is registered in the land book as a burgher's house. It had several rooms, a cellar, a kitchen, utility rooms, and a garden.

Interesting fact: the house had its own well.

Reconstruction

Extension and reconstruction

The house is undergoing a major reconstruction. From an originally single-story building, it is gradually becoming a larger object with an upper floor and an adjusted floor plan.
